Here's the assignment guide for your project. The assessment guide (rubric) is available in class.
ENG 3U1 Narrative WritingObjectives: To demonstrate understanding of plot, characterization, setting, dialogue, and various literary devices through the creation of a short story; to successfully edit writing both collaboratively and individually; to demonstrate originality in thought.
The Task: To write a 750 to 1000 word short story that fulfills the above objectives. The narrative perspective, the genre and subject are your decisions. If you need them, several starter ideas can be provided for you.
Requirements: You must hand in a brainstorm, plot chart, setting outlines, character outlines, an edited rough copy, a final copy, and a title page.
Steps:
1 - Brainstorm: create a brainstorm/thought web about your ideas for a story. Consider things like characters, story ideas, setting possibilities, etc.
2 – The Plot Chart: Using your brainstorm and note on plot, chart your story according to the five plot sections.
3 – Character Outlines: List the main characteristics/personality of your MAIN characters and give a physical description of them.
4 – Setting Outlines: For each of your MAIN settings (there may be only one), describe your setting as it is laid out in your story.
5 – The Rough Copy: Write your rough draft. Focus on getting all of your ideas on paper and your story told as best you can. Don’t worry about length (within reason), spelling/grammar, conflicting ideas, minor errors, or other problems. These can be tackled in the editing process.
6 – Edit the Rough Copy: This will take place during an in-class session and on your own.
7 – The Final Copy: Using all of your changes/edits/revisions, TYPE your final copy.
Assessment Criteria: Completion of requirements 1–6 will be incorporated into the final mark as PROCESS. The final copy itself will be marked according to a short story RUBRIC. You will also receive a TOTAL MARKS SHEET that will show how everything is to be totalled.
